About

Wild Gravel is a cycling, walking and running event set against the striking backdrop of the Stirling Range, known in Noongar language as Koi Kyeunu-ruff. Hosted by the Shire of Gnowangerup, the event brings together riders, runners, walkers and spectators for a day that blends challenge, connection and regional pride.

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, Wild Gravel offers a range of distances to suit all abilities. The longest course, at 150km, stretches through to Kendenup, showcasing the region’s diverse landscapes. At the other end of the spectrum, a 5km walk ensures families and beginners can be part of the experience. The event is designed to be inclusive, welcoming participants of all fitness levels, including those riding e-bikes.

The inaugural event in October 2024 welcomed 350 participants and immediately set the tone for what Wild Gravel is all about. The event village came to life along the narrow stretch of Stirling Range Drive, creating a unique and energetic hub. Local Elder Ezzard Flowers delivered a rich Welcome to Country, grounding the event in culture and place, while ideal weather helped make the day one to remember.

Following the day Mt Trio Caravan Park and Bush Camp have hosted a vibrant after party, many stories of the day are told around the campfire while live music plays and drinks flow.

In 2025, held on 11 October, the event continued to grow. Nearly 700 participants joined, double from the year before. 2025 saw the introduction of the 150km course that meandered down through Kendenup and back. Auscycling also jumped on board making the 150km and 100km events official gravel races. The event village moved to the gravel pit, offering significantly more space and allowing for a central gazebo and expanded layout. This shift created a more comfortable and vibrant experience for participants, vendors and spectators alike.

Looking ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be an exciting next chapter with the introduction of the Wild Gravel Untamed events—designed for those wanting to venture further off-road and take on a more adventurous challenge.
Wild Gravel is proudly supported by the WA Government Department of Cultural Industry Tourism and Sport (CITS) and AFGRI Equipment for the third consecutive year, alongside a strong network of sponsors, local businesses, volunteers, vendors and community supporters who help bring the event to life.

The event also extends thanks to the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions for access to the national park, and acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which the event takes place, paying respect to Elders past and present.

Host

Wild Gravel is proudly hosted by the Shire of Gnowangerup, with a dedicated team working behind the scenes to bring the event together each year.

At the core of delivery is a small but committed group—Rory Murray, Stuart Drummond, Penny Wells and Neah Stewart—who lead the planning, coordination and overall event delivery.
A significant contribution also comes from the Shire’s depot crew, whose work in traffic management, course preparation and on-the-day logistics is critical to the safe and smooth running of the event.
Support from the wider organisation is equally important, with the management and finance teams playing a key role in ensuring everything runs efficiently behind the scenes.

Just as important are the many Shire staff who volunteer their time on the day—stepping into a wide range of roles and helping create the atmosphere that makes Wild Gravel what it is. Their energy, willingness to pitch in and strong community spirit are what truly carry the event and give it its unique feel.

Wild Gravel is a true whole-of-Shire effort, reflecting a shared commitment to delivering a high-quality regional event for the community and visitors alike.
